Challenge

Despite numerous advances in the Surgery field, postoperative surgical site infections (SSIs) are one of the principal causes of hospital infection and lead the high morbidity and mortality. The prevention of these infections is fundamental, being the antisepsis of the skin a critical factor in this prevention.

The challenge was knowing the routine follow-up in clinical practice of the international guidelines and developing recommendations to improve the management of cutaneous antisepsis in orthopedic and traumatological surgeries scheduled at the national level.

Solution

The PREVENCOT project has been developed by a Scientific Committee of specialists in Orthopedic and Traumatology Surgery.

As a starting point, a survey was developed, pointed to orthopedic surgeons, to analyze adherence in daily clinical practice to international guidelines for the prevention of surgical site infection in orthopedic surgery. On the other hand, we conducted a review of the available evidence on the management of SSI prevention in scheduled orthopedic surgery.

Results

138 Orthopedic Surgeons belonging to 124 hospital centers answered the survey. The challenge of the project was the interruption of collecting surveys due to the global pandemic of COVID-19.

The Scientific Committee prepared the document "Recommendations for the prevention of surgical site infection in orthopedic surgery".  In addition, the article  "PREVENCOT Project: Do we follow the international recommendations for the prevention of surgical site infection in scheduled orthopedic surgery?" has been written for publication in the Spanish Journal of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology.
